NORFOLK, Va. – Quanneisha Perry scored 13 points and snatched 13 rebounds as the Lady Pirates of Hampton University topped the Norfolk State University Lady Spartans 68-51 here on Saturday, improving to 12-7 overall and 6-1 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. NSU, meanwhile, dropped to 3-14 overall and remained winless in the MEAC at 0-7.

Perry, a freshman forward from Decatur, Ga., had one of the best overall games of her young career. Head coach Walter Mebane said he was impressed not only with her performance, but with the performance of the entire team.

“Perry had another double-double and I thought collectively that the team did a great job tonight,” noted Perry. “Ashlee Finley had nine rebounds and 12 points on the night and our inside play really elevated and showed what was going on.”

The first half of play saw 27 turnovers between the two teams. Despite the Lady Pirates’ turnovers in the first half, they were able to come out on top at the intermission, 32-21.

Hampton grabbed 31 rebounds in the first half behind freshman forward Quanneisha Perry who snatched a team high eight in the half. Hampton shot only 36 percent (13-of-36) from the floor in the first, but was able to hold the Spartans to 8-of-34 shooting from the floor, a percentage of just 23 percent.

In the second half, the Lady Pirates came out ready to play as they shot an impressive 60 percent (15-of-25) from the field in the final half of play. Hampton also shot 50 percent (3-of-6) from the three-point arc and 75 percent (3-of-4) from the charity stripe. The Spartans did manage to shoot 40 percent (12-of-30) from the floor in the second half.

Hampton scored 40 points in the paint and 24 points off the bench on the night. The Lady Pirates also out-rebounded NSU 53-to-28 on the night.

“I thought that tonight we showed our dominance on the inside,” said Mebane. “Coming into the game with their limited number of players, we thought that rebounding was going to be a key for us as it always is.”

The Lady Pirates will be back on the road on Monday, February 6 as they travel to Greensboro, NC to take on the MEAC’s first place team, the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T State University. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.

“It’s just the next game on the schedule,” Mebane said of playing on the home court of the Lady Aggies. “They’re playing excellent ball right now, but we’re going to be prepared for them. We’re going to play as hard as we can, but it’s just like playing any other team in the conference at this point. “It’s going to be a dog fight night-in and night-out.”
